The first time I photographed The Rolling Stones, it was for their 1993 album Voodoo Lounge. They were deep into releasing the record and planning a world tour, which is a vulnerable moment for musicians. It was important to create a kind of trusting collaboration with the band. Keith was upstairs listening to the mixes while Mick, Charlie, and Ronnie were waiting for him to come down for the group shots, so we did the individual portraits first. When Keith came down, he got in front of the camera and just went. He was like this vaudevillian performer, but his sense of performance isn’t contrived or contrary to who he really is. What you see is what you get. And what you get is 50% wise man, 50% wise guy. He’s a total original.
