THE PHOTO

My number one rule for photographing a guitar player is to make sure they have a guitar so that they have something to do. When Carlos Santana picked this one up, his entire demeanor changed to the most joyful, loving, childlike spirit. It was like he was holding a baby. This was in San Francisco, in 1992, between his 25-Year Celebration Tour the previous year and the Santana/Bob Dylan tour the following year. And here he was, this absolute icon, performing a little concert for us in the studio. It was a gift.
