THE PHOTO

I must have listened to Joni Mitchell’s album, Blue, one hundred times before photographing her. When preparing for a portrait sitting, I often immerse myself in the subject’s work. I want it to feel personal. Joni has this wonderful smile and laugh—almost giddy, whimsical, childlike. I set up at a little bungalow at the Hotel Bel-Air, in Los Angeles, where she could be surrounded by an organic, earthy backdrop to give a semblance of nature.
